Ford Motor Company has scaled back parts of its electric vehicle strategy in recent years, but the automaker isn’t abandoning EVs altogether. Instead, the company is shifting its focus toward more affordable electric models, according to a report from Supercar Blondie.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said the global race to dominate the electric vehicle market is still in its early stages. He explained that the automaker is adjusting its long-term strategy to better position itself in the evolving EV landscape.

As part of that shift, Ford is prioritizing the development of a lower-cost electric car designed to compete with vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y. The company is aiming for a starting price of around $30,000, which would place it among the more affordable EV options in the U.S. market.

Farley also revealed that Ford is building a new universal electric vehicle architecture known as the UEV platform. The platform is reportedly being developed by a small, specialized team that includes former engineers from Tesla, Inc. and Formula One.

According to Farley, the new architecture is designed to be highly flexible. It should be capable of underpinning multiple body styles, including compact crossovers, sedans, and even delivery vans.

He also hinted that a $30,000 electric pickup based on the UEV platform could debut as early as 2027. A sedan positioned to rival the Model 3 and Model Y could follow soon after, potentially arriving in late 2027 or early 2028.
