A standard Bugatti Mistral is already one of the most exclusive automobiles on the planet. The open-top hypercar serves as the final chapter for Bugatti’s legendary 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine, producing 1,600 horsepower, while total production is limited to just 99 units worldwide. Yet for some buyers, even that level of rarity isn’t enough.

That’s where Bugatti’s Sur Mesure personalization program comes in. Through the brand’s bespoke division, customer ideas are transformed into rolling works of art. The latest creation is a unique Mistral known as Le Retour du Jeune Prince, or “The Return of the Little Prince.”

The project began in late 2023 when a longtime Bugatti client met with Sur Mesure program director Jascha Straub in Molsheim, France. The customer wanted a car that would pay tribute not only to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous novel The Little Prince but also to his own literary work that continues the story of the beloved character. Bugatti’s design team, led by Sabine Consolini, turned that concept into reality.

The first thing that stands out is the car’s distinctive color scheme. Designers created a custom blend of copper, bronze, and silver tones intended to evoke moonlight reflecting across the Earth’s surface. Depending on lighting conditions, the bodywork shifts in appearance, highlighting the dramatic lines inherited from the Chiron-based platform.

Even the signature horseshoe grille received special treatment. Its internal pattern now mirrors the contours of the hood, creating a stronger sense of forward motion.

The most remarkable details, however, reveal themselves gradually. Artists hand-painted a star-filled sky across the rear fenders and rear wing. Every silver star was applied individually through a complex multi-layer painting process.

There’s also a hidden surprise. When the active air brake deploys, artwork on the underside of the rear wing becomes visible, depicting one of the most memorable scenes from The Little Prince featuring the Little Prince and the Fox.

The custom touches continue throughout the exterior. The Bugatti grille badge features gold trim, the brake calipers are finished in copper, and the EB wheel center caps are color-matched to the body. Even the W16 engine carries special engravings inspired by characters from Saint-Exupéry’s story.

Inside, the literary theme becomes even more elaborate. The cabin combines two exclusive leather colors called Terre d’Or and Driftwood. The door panels are especially striking, featuring a hand-embroidered moon surrounded by stars. That celestial theme extends throughout the inerior and even appears on the seat headrests.

The center console is finished in brown carbon fiber accented with decorative star elements. But the cabin’s most impressive detail may be the gear selector itself.

Embedded within it is a miniature silver rose, one of the most recognizable symbols from The Little Prince. To create it, craftsmen first performed a 3D scan of a real rose before recreating it in silver with remarkable precision. The result is essentially a piece of fine jewelry integrated into the vehicle.

Mechanically, Le Retour du Jeune Prince remains identical to the standard Mistral. Power comes from Bugatti’s 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine generating 1,600 horsepower. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to all four wheels.

Performance figures almost feel secondary in a project like this. Still, knowing that this literary-inspired creation is capable of exceeding 248 mph adds another layer of fascination to the car.

Bugatti describes projects like this as the purest expression of its Sur Mesure philosophy, where every vehicle becomes a reflection of its owner's personality. Le Retour du Jeune Prince is a perfect example of just how far the company is willing to go when a customer arrives with a truly unique vision and the means to bring it to life.
