A Japanese camper van turns a compact interior into a practical getaway with a permanent bed, kitchen and minimalist living area.
Dream Drive has turned a Japanese long-wheelbase van into the NICO, a compact camper with a full-size double bed, kitchen and minimalist lounge area. Its biggest selling point is the permanent 70.9-by-55.1-inch bed, which does not have to be folded out every night. The camper made its public debut in Japan.
The underlying van has been in production since 1973. Originally introduced as a cab-over-engine commercial vehicle, it eventually found a wide range of uses beyond basic cargo duty, including recreational travel.
The Dream Drive NICO is based on a long-body version of the van with a standard-width body and high roof. It measures about 200 inches long, 66.7 inches wide and 90 inches tall.
The permanent double bed takes up most of the rear section of the cabin. The space underneath can be used for storage or to accommodate a refrigerator.
A compact kitchen is positioned behind the passenger seat. Next to it is a dedicated seat and a removable table, creating a small dining area without requiring the interior to be completely rearranged.
The NICO can carry three people while driving and sleep two at night. For a couple, the layout leaves much of the cabin open even with the bed ready for use.
The interior makes extensive use of plywood, while the furniture includes a walnut countertop. The designers opted for a simple, functional look rather than filling the cabin with decorative details.
Standard equipment includes a 100-amp-hour lithium-ion battery, a 1,000-watt inverter, a charging system that works while driving, an exterior power outlet and two AC outlets. The camper also comes with a sink, faucet, water pump and a 2.6-gallon water tank.
An exterior shower is available for use outside the vehicle. Optional equipment includes a MaxxFan, an FF heating package, a refrigerator and an upgraded battery system.
The NICO is offered with either a 2.5-liter gasoline engine or a 2.4-liter diesel. The camper will be available with the long body, standard width and high roof.
Pricing for the Dream Drive NICO starts at approximately $47,000 based on current exchange rates. The camper is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in March 2027.
