The upcoming biopic Maserati: The Brothers follows the three siblings who built one of Italy’s most iconic automakers.
The world of motorsports and automotive legends has never completely disappeared from the big screen. Some stories become high-octane franchises such as The Fast and the Furious, while others take the documentary route, as with Senna. Still others focus on individual races or racing heroes—we need only look at Days of Thunder, which is getting a sequel 36 years after the original.
Now, another chapter in the cinematic history of Italy’s legendary automakers is taking shape.
Following biopics about Ferrari and Lamborghini, the spotlight is turning to Maserati, with the new movie timed to coincide with the brand’s 100th anniversary. Titled Maserati: The Brothers, the film will tell the story of Alfieri, Bindo and Carlo Maserati, the three brothers who helped establish the automaker behind the famous trident emblem.
Michele Morrone, Salvatore Esposito and Lorenzo de Moor will play Alfieri, Bindo and Carlo Maserati, respectively. But the biggest names in the cast are two Hollywood icons:
The project was first announced in March 2023, with Bobby Moresco taking the director’s chair. Moresco is known for his work as a producer on Million Dollar Baby and Crash, as well as for writing and directing Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend.
Some members of the production team from the Lamborghini project have returned for the Maserati film, while composer Tuomas Kantelinen is also back to provide the score.
There is another connection between the two movies. Actor Andrea Bruschi, who previously played a doctor in Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend, will portray Franco Scaglione in Maserati: The Brothers. Scaglione served as Bertone’s chief designer from 1951 to 1959 and was responsible for some of the era’s most memorable automotive designs.
Among his best-known projects was the Maserati 3500 GT coupe. Scaglione also worked on cars for Abarth, Fiat and Alfa Romeo, with the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale often cited as his masterpiece. British designer Gordon Murray has likewise singled out the 33 Stradale as one of the greatest designs ever created.
Scaglione’s portfolio extended well beyond Alfa Romeo and Maserati. He also designed for Porsche, Lamborghini—including the 350 GTV—NSU, Jaguar and Aston Martin, as well as the now-defunct Siata and Arnolt brands.
With a cast that includes Pacino, Hopkins, Garcia and Alba, Maserati: The Brothers is shaping up to be a high-profile addition to the growing list of movies about the people behind legendary automotive brands.
