Porsche’s next flagship could use Audi architecture, creating a new supercar positioned well above the 911 in the lineup.
Porsche is considering a new flagship supercar that could use the architecture of the Audi Nuvolari, according to reports from overseas media. The Nuvolari is closely related to the Lamborghini Temerario, meaning a potential Porsche model would be another example of Volkswagen Group brands sharing the same underlying technology. The approach could also allow Porsche to avoid developing an entirely new car from the ground up.
Porsche has previously said it is evaluating the possibility of building a new hypercar. One option could be a project based on technology developed by Audi. In that case, the recently unveiled Nuvolari would serve as the foundation, with the Audi itself sharing its architecture and powertrain with the Lamborghini Temerario.
Audi has already positioned the concept well above Lamborghini’s original performance level. The Nuvolari reportedly uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a twin-turbocharged V8 with two electric motors, producing 987 horsepower. Production is expected to be limited to 499 cars, while the body will be made from carbon fiber. Pricing starts at around $700,000, putting it well above the Lamborghini Temerario.
A Porsche based on the same hardware could use much of that technical package. Both related models feature plug-in hybrid powertrains with a twin-turbocharged V8, while their performance is expected to include a 0-62 mph sprint in roughly 2 seconds and an engine redline of around 10,000 rpm. For Porsche, the architecture could underpin a car positioned significantly above the 911.
Volkswagen Group has plenty of history when it comes to sharing technology between its brands. The Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo, followed by the Huracán, were closely related under the skin. Porsche also uses shared group architectures. The MLB Evo platform, for example, underpins the Cayenne as well as various models from Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini.
Another potential example is the upcoming electric Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman. The two sports cars are expected to use the same platform as the production version of the Audi Concept C. Audi has continued developing its project even as Porsche has raised questions about its future plans for the electric 718 models.
Another possible shared project is a large three-row Porsche SUV. According to Automotive News, the model could be closely related to the recently introduced Audi Q9. If the project moves forward, it would represent another step toward closer technical cooperation between the two brands.
