Elon Musk’s 2025 Tesla compensation could have bought nearly 10% of Bitcoin’s maximum supply at May’s price.
Elon Musk’s 2025 compensation from Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) was valued at $158.35 billion, according to the company’s amended regulatory filing.
Tesla disclosed the figure in a Form 10-K/A filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 1, 2026. The filing put Musk’s total annual compensation for 2025 at $158.35 billion.
The number, however, primarily represents an accounting valuation of stock awards. Musk did not receive $158 billion in cash or realize that amount as compensation.
The figure takes on a different scale when compared with Bitcoin. Had Musk converted his 2025 Tesla compensation into cash and used the entire amount to purchase Bitcoin on the day Tesla disclosed his pay, the hypothetical transaction would have amounted to nearly 10% of Bitcoin’s maximum supply.
Musk acknowledged owning Bitcoin as early as 2021. During a panel discussion that year, he said he held Bitcoin alongside Ethereum (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE).
In a podcast last year, Musk said he expects the concept of money to eventually disappear as advanced automation meets human needs on a large scale. He also suggested that an energy-based currency such as Bitcoin could replace it.
Tesla has also had direct exposure to Bitcoin. In February 2021, the company disclosed that it had purchased 43,200 BTC.
Tesla later tested Bitcoin as a payment method for vehicle purchases, but ended the program within weeks, pointing to the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.
The company sold 10% of its Bitcoin holdings during the first quarter of 2021. In the second quarter of 2022, Tesla sold roughly 75% of what remained.
A smaller purchase in January 2025 brought Tesla’s holdings to 11,509 Bitcoin. The company did not sell additional coins afterward.
Bitcoin was trading at approximately $76,300 on May 1, the day Tesla disclosed Musk’s 2025 compensation.
At that price, $158.35 billion would have been enough to purchase roughly 2.075 million BTC.
Bitcoin’s maximum supply is capped at 21 million coins. A hypothetical purchase of 2.075 million BTC would therefore represent nearly 10% of the cryptocurrency’s maximum possible supply.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $77,173.
