The Ball-Stud Hemi Mystery: How a Revolutionary Engine Faded Into History — What Killed the Project

In the late 1960s, Chrysler planned to replace its heavy V8s with a new engine, but the Ball-Stud Hemi never made it beyond the prototype stage. Why did the promising project never get its chance, and what happened to the only surviving example?

Chrysler's history is filled with mysterious projects, but few are as intriguing as the Ball-Stud Hemi. In the late 1960s, the company's engineers set out to create an engine that could serve as a worthy alternative to massive V8s while retaining the brand's signature character and performance. After the success of the 426 Hemi, which transformed the perception of speed on both the street and the track, Chrysler realized it needed an engine that was simpler, lighter, and cheaper to build.

That led to Project A279, better known as the Ball-Stud Hemi. Its goal was ambitious: to replace the entire big-block lineup, including the 383, 400, 440, and even the classic 426. Engineers proposed two displacement options — 400 and 444 cubic inches — hoping to deliver nearly the same output as the classic Hemis without their complexity and weight. But tougher emissions regulations were already on the horizon, while the fuel crisis threatened to bring the muscle-car era to an end.

Technically, the Hemi was a true experiment. Instead of conventional shafts and massive cylinder heads, engineers used a B-series block with hemispherical combustion chambers and rocker arms mounted on ball studs. Inspired by the Chevrolet Mark IV design, they used a canted-valve layout and the same valve dimensions as the 426 Hemi. As a result, the engine was 100 pounds lighter and 16.5 inches narrower than its predecessor. Based on average figures, the 444 version produced more power than the 440 engine but fell slightly short of the top 426 version equipped with dual carburetors.

However, serious problems emerged on the road to production. To use the existing block, engineers had to retain the old cylinder-head mounting arrangement, which resulted in curved exhaust ports and a combustion chamber that was not completely hemispherical. These shortcomings could have been addressed, but money became the biggest obstacle. In 1969, Chrysler was facing rising costs to retool its manufacturing facilities along with tougher emissions requirements. Under those circumstances, launching a new family of big-block engines looked too risky, especially as the muscle-car market was shrinking rapidly.

Ultimately, the Ball-Stud Hemi project was canceled at an early stage. Estimates vary, but between three and 12 prototypes were reportedly built, and only one has survived to this day. Its story is no less remarkable than the engine itself. Legendary drag racer Dick Landy somehow acquired the unique engine and immediately began modifying it: he bored the cylinders, replaced components, and changed the intake. The engine later appeared in a rare 1969 Plymouth Barracuda, which changed hands for years, competed in races, and came to be regarded as an almost mythical artifact. Eventually, the car with this Ball-Stud Hemi ended up at the National Automobile Museum.

The story of the Ball-Stud Hemi is an example of how even the most promising ideas can remain unrealized when circumstances take a different turn. This engine could have shaped the look of American cars in the 1970s, but instead became a victim of changes in the industry. Today, it is remembered only by enthusiasts and collectors, while the engine itself has become a symbol of an unrealized promise and engineering daring.
