Next Subaru Levorg Will Be a Sporty Wagon for the Electrification Era

Details have emerged about the next generation of Subaru's popular wagon.

Subaru is preparing a new generation of the Levorg, which is expected to arrive in 2027. The biggest change will be the switch to the S hybrid powertrain, while the current 1.8- and 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engines will make way for a new electrified setup.

The first-generation Subaru Levorg debuted in 2014, while the current second generation arrived in 2020. The model was developed as a sporty wagon combining dynamic performance, all-wheel drive, and the practicality of a wagon body. The current generation also introduced a suite of modern safety systems.

The key change for the next Levorg will be its powertrain, according to Japanese outlet Goo-Net. The wagon is currently offered with a 1.8-liter turbocharged boxer engine, while the STI Sport R version uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with direct injection. In the next generation, the 2.4-liter turbo engine is expected to disappear from the lineup, with the S hybrid system becoming the main focus.

The system is based on a series-parallel setup that combines Toyota's hybrid technology with Subaru's 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. The system uses two electric motors: one handles propulsion, while the other generates electricity. Their operation, together with the engine, changes depending on driving conditions.

Despite this, electrification will not mean abandoning Subaru's traditional all-wheel-drive system. The front and rear axles will still be mechanically connected by a driveshaft. As a result, the new system will combine Toyota's hybrid technology with Subaru's boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive.

Moreover, dropping the powerful 2.4-liter turbo engine does not necessarily mean losing the Levorg's sporty character. The immediate power delivery and responsiveness of the electric motor, combined with chassis tuning and all-wheel drive, are expected to preserve the Levorg's dynamic philosophy. Subaru engineers' task will be not simply to create an economical hybrid, but to use electrification to enhance the wagon's sporty qualities.

The changes will also extend to the design. The next Levorg will likely be lower and wider than the current model, with sportier proportions. Its styling could follow the design language of the next-generation four-door WRX: an aggressive, sharply styled front end, wider fenders, and a low-slung cabin should emphasize the wagon's distinction from crossovers.

The character of the Levorg Layback variant will also change. It is currently a raised version of the wagon with increased ground clearance and crossover-inspired styling. In the next generation, the model could adopt a more pronounced off-road look with underbody protection and a more substantial front end.

The new Levorg is expected to premiere in the second half of 2027. The vehicle will most likely debut at next year's Japan Mobility Show as a production-ready vehicle or a preproduction prototype next fall.

Recently, there was also news about a potential generational change for another well-known Subaru wagon, the Outback. The vehicle has already appeared in the first unofficial renderings, which suggest major changes not only to its exterior, which will become more rugged and off-road-oriented, but also to its technical components.
