Honda’s subcompact crossover could gain hybrid power as the automaker prepares a major WR-V update for 2027.
Honda is considering a major update for the WR-V as early as 2027. As the automaker moves toward broader use of hybrid technology, the next version of the crossover could bring more than revised styling, with a new powertrain also potentially part of the package.
The Honda WR-V first arrived in 2017, with the original generation developed primarily for emerging markets. The Japanese-market crossover debuted in March 2024 as a separate compact model in Honda’s lineup. A major update is expected for 2027, tied to the automaker’s move toward its next generation of hybrid technology.
The current WR-V occupies a niche between Honda’s smaller compact models and the more expensive Vezel. The Japanese-market version measures 170.3 inches long, 70.5 inches wide, and 65.0 inches tall. Pricing starts at 2.1 million yen, or approximately $14,650.
Power currently comes from a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a CVT. The engine produces 118 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque.
The biggest potential change could be the addition of a hybrid powertrain. Competitors already offer hybrid versions, making a gas-electric setup one possible way for Honda to strengthen the WR-V’s position in the market.
Honda’s next generation of hybrid technology is expected to use a revised platform and an updated powertrain. The stated goal is to improve fuel efficiency by more than 10 percent through greater system efficiency and reduced weight. Global rollout of the new technology is scheduled to begin gradually in 2027.
Outside Japan, a camouflaged vehicle has already been spotted that is believed to be an updated version of the India-market Elevate. That model served as the basis for the Japanese WR-V, although it is not yet possible to say whether all of the changes seen on the test vehicle will carry over to the Japanese version.

Expected exterior changes include redesigned front and rear bumpers, new headlights and taillights, and a different wheel design, as shown in unofficial renderings accompanying this report. The interior could also receive updates, although no renderings of the cabin have been shown yet.
Additional equipment could include a larger display, a 360-degree camera system, ventilated seats, and updated driver-assistance features.
Honda Sensing is also expected to receive improvements, along with the infotainment system.
