An auto mechanic has explained how drivers can open and close their car windows remotely using a key fob—and why the trick only works on vehicles equipped with automatic window-closing hardware.

Modern cars are designed with convenience in mind, and even affordable models can offer useful features such as automatic window closing. This feature can raise the windows when the vehicle is locked. An auto mechanic explained how to use the system and what to do if it doesn't work by default in an interview with Auto30.

The first thing to check is whether the power windows have an automatic closing function. If the feature came from the factory or was installed as an aftermarket upgrade, the windows may be configured to close automatically when you lock the car with the key fob. Without the necessary hardware, the windows won't open or close automatically through the remote. That's the essential requirement, and other steps won't work without it.

How to Program Your Car Windows

On many modern vehicles, programming the power windows is straightforward. Lower a window all the way, then press and hold the window switch in the down position for a few more seconds. Next, raise the window completely and hold the switch in the up position for several seconds.

After the procedure is complete, a quick press of the down switch should lower the window automatically. A quick press of the up switch should raise it without requiring you to hold the button. The exact procedure varies by vehicle, but the basic principle is similar across many models.

On some vehicles, the security system does more than lock the doors when you arm it. It can also raise the windows and close the sunroof, if equipped. On certain models, one press of the lock button is enough. Others may require several presses in quick succession, while some respond when you press and hold the lock button for a couple of seconds.

The important limitation remains the same: these functions only work when the vehicle has the necessary automatic window-closing capability.

You Can Open the Windows Remotely, Too

The key fob may also let you lower the windows remotely, which can come in handy on a hot day or when you want to ventilate the cabin before getting behind the wheel.

On some vehicles, this works by pressing and holding the unlock button for several seconds. The doors don't necessarily have to open for the windows to roll down. However, the exact operation depends on the vehicle's make, model, and settings.

Only use this feature when you can keep an eye on the car. Leaving the windows open and walking away can expose the interior to theft, even if the doors remain locked.

A car without automatic window controls isn't necessarily missing anything essential. This is primarily a convenience feature, not a safety requirement, and aftermarket systems may be available for vehicles that didn't come with it.

Still, remotely lowering the windows can make a noticeable difference in hot weather. Instead of returning to a cabin that has been baking in the sun, drivers can let some hot air escape before getting inside. That can make the initial drive more comfortable without having to spend as much time airing out the interior.
