When the «Service» message or a key symbol lights up on the dashboard, it could indicate either a trivial issue or a serious malfunction. This message is generated by the engine control unit, which monitors all the key systems of the vehicle. If operational parameters deviate from the norm, the system informs the driver via the dashboard indicator.

Most often, «Service» signals that it's time for scheduled maintenance: oil change, filter replacement, and checking technical fluids. However, there are instances when the message appears due to a malfunction in specific components — such as sensors, the exhaust gas recirculation system, or the electronic throttle body. In some cases, this warning indicates more severe issues: engine overheating, oil pressure drop, or glitches in the injection system.

If the car's behavior hasn't changed, the engine runs smoothly, there are no other alarming signals on the dashboard, and no strange noises are coming from under the hood — it's safe to cautiously drive to a service center. Nonetheless, postponing diagnostics is not advisable: even minor errors could lead to expensive repairs if ignored. The electronics might enter an emergency mode and limit the engine's power — then you would only be able to drive with minimal revs, lacking normal torque.

If the «Service» warning is accompanied by deteriorated performance, jolts, increased coolant temperature, or a burning smell — stopping immediately is mandatory. Continuing to drive could lead to the complete failure of the engine. A definitive diagnosis can only be made following computer diagnostics via the OBD-II port.

It's crucial to understand: the sooner you find out the reason for the «Service» message, the higher the chance to prevent serious issues and preserve the vehicle's lifespan.
