Nissan is likely preparing the return of the Xterra SUV — now with a framed construction, a hybrid powertrain, and futuristic design. However, this has not been confirmed yet.

In the early 2000s, Nissan released the Xterra SUV, which stood out for its superior off-road capabilities compared to others. After 2 generations and 15 years of production, the vehicle was retired (in 2015).

It is expected that the Xterra will soon return to the lineup. Moreover, it will do so in a modern exterior appearance and with the latest technical equipment.

Japanese media claim that Nissan will soon expand its SUV lineup with a model featuring a ladder frame.

Previously, Japanese brand marketers released teasers of new company models, among which a large SUV was spotted. It is expected that this might be the fresh Xterra.

The vehicle, according to marketing materials, will feature a front end with a closed radiator grille and unusual L-shaped LED daytime running lights in the shape of Tetris figures. In addition, the SUV might also sport a high relief hood and large roof rails.

The basis for the modern Xterra should be the platform of the current generation Frontier pickup. Alongside the chassis with a ladder frame, the SUV will inherit a high ground clearance and the e-Power hybrid system with an electric motor as the main drive.

Simultaneously, buyers may be offered this model with a plug-in petrol-electric powertrain PHEV, delivering over 410 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque.

The premiere of the new Nissan Xterra could take place as early as the end of this year.
