The Chevrolet Onix may soon be offered with a powertrain designed to run solely on ethanol.
Currently, the Onix and nearly all Chevrolet internal combustion models in Brazil are equipped with flex-fuel engines that can use both gasoline and ethanol.
However, GM’s marketing and engineering teams in Brazil are considering a new base version of the Onix powered exclusively by ethanol. The re-tuned engine, paired with competitive pricing, would allow the company to reduce the vehicle’s cost.
According to GM’s preliminary plan, the naturally aspirated 1.0-liter I3 engine currently used in the Chevrolet Onix would be re-engineered to run only on ethanol. The modifications are expected to include redesigned combustion chambers, updates to the valve lift control system, and other enhancements.
For now, the ethanol-only option is planned for the five-door Onix hatchback and will not extend to the Onix Plus sedan. GM has not yet announced when this version might reach the market.
