Ford is developing an all-new electric “pickup” with a fresh platform and a radical design.
Ford CEO Jim Farley has revealed that the company’s upcoming electric truck — expected to cost around $30,000 — will be a completely new kind of vehicle. Built on the Universal EV Platform, the model, according to Farley, “isn’t really a pickup in the traditional sense.”
The EV will feature a new body shape, a roomy interior larger than a Toyota RAV4’s, and a double cab. Ford is emphasizing advanced digital technology, promising a user interface “unlike anything on the market — even in China.” The vehicle will be rear-wheel-drive, very quick, and designed to be fun to drive.
The Universal EV Platform will also serve as the foundation for several future models. Production will use an innovative new process: the body will be made from three large cast sections, reducing the number of components by 20% and speeding up assembly at the Louisville plant by 40%.
Farley noted that no automaker has built EVs this way before, adding that Ford’s approach could “redefine what affordable electric vehicles can be.” The new model is expected to hit the market in 2027.
