Ford has patented a coordinated control system for electric trailers.
Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a coordinated control system designed to manage an electric-powered trailer in tandem with the tow vehicle—a technology that could appear in future Ford models. The patent application was originally submitted in January 2022 and was published in late December 2025.
At the core of the concept is close cooperation between the vehicle and the electric trailer. The system takes into account battery charge levels, the weight of both the vehicle and the trailer, and current driving conditions. Using this data, it calculates how energy should be optimally distributed between the two.
One of the key use cases is offsetting the loss of driving range that typically comes with towing. If the system determines there isn’t enough energy to reach the destination, it can automatically rebalance the available charge between the vehicle and the trailer. This approach can also reduce strain on the thermal management system—an especially critical factor for electric vehicles when hauling heavy loads.
