Visually, the new model stands apart from more modest Mustangs with redesigned bumpers.
The extreme Ford Mustang GTD made its debut in the summer of 2023 and went on to become the fastest American car ever to lap the Nürburgring in late 2024. However, a starting price of $325,000 and limited production numbers put it out of reach for most fans of the model. Now, Ford has announced a new Mustang Dark Horse SC variant that borrows several technical features from the GTD.
On the outside, the newcomer differs from less aggressive Mustangs with redesigned bumpers, larger front air intakes, and a more prominent rear diffuser. An optional Track Pack is available, which includes carbon-fiber wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, and upgraded aerodynamic components.
In addition, a ventilated aluminum hood improves cooling efficiency, while a large rear spoiler and wing generate up to 620 pounds (281 kg) of rear downforce at 180 mph (290 km/h). The optional package also allows curb weight to be reduced by approximately 150 pounds (68 kg).
The interior features Alcantara and carbon-fiber trim. Optional Recaro seats are available, and with the Track Pack, the rear seats are replaced by a parcel shelf.
Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V8 borrowed from the GTD, paired with a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission. Output figures have not yet been disclosed. In the GTD, this engine produces 826 horsepower, while the standard Dark Horse uses a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 rated at 507 horsepower.
The car is also equipped with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, forged suspension control arms, a magnesium strut brace, and updated MagneRide dampers. However, unlike the Mustang GTD—which features a bespoke chassis developed with Canadian engineering firm Multimatic, extensive body and layout modifications, and a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox—the Dark Horse SC retains a conventional layout.
Pricing details have not yet been announced. For reference, the standard Ford Mustang Dark Horse starts at $64,080 in base form and $69,075 in the Premium trim. Pre-orders for the Mustang Dark Horse SC in the U.S. will open in the spring, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the summer.
