Off-Road Legend: How Toyota Turned the Land Cruiser Into One of the World’s Most Iconic SUVs

Even today, the Toyota Land Cruiser stands as one of the most popular and instantly recognizable SUVs on the planet. Its story began back in the 20th century, and over the decades, it evolved from a basic utility vehicle into one of the most respected off-road machines ever built. By 2019, Toyota had already sold more than 10 million Land Cruisers worldwide.

As of 2026, that number has climbed past 12 million units. So how did Toyota transform what started as a fairly simple work vehicle into a true automotive legend?

First Came the Willys

World War II ended badly for Japan, both economically and industrially. Most people know about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but fewer realize that by that time, more than 70 Japanese cities had already been heavily damaged by American bombing campaigns. Much of the country’s industrial base was destroyed, including major manufacturing facilities.

After the war, rebuilding the nation became the top priority, and the auto industry was a major part of that effort. Like many companies during that period, Toyota had to look overseas for inspiration and technology.

Toyota’s first postwar off-road vehicle was heavily based on the American Willys Jeep. The first prototypes appeared in 1951 and were originally called the Toyota Jeep. Not long after, likely for business and trademark reasons, the vehicle was renamed Toyota BJ. The “J” still referred to “Jeep,” and Toyota never tried to hide the clear influence of the American original.

Built With Real Muscle

The biggest difference between the Japanese version and the Willys was under the hood. Toyota installed its own Type B engine, borrowed from a 4-ton truck. It produced 85 horsepower and was paired with a 4-speed manual transmission.

The result was a surprisingly capable machine. In fact, it became the first vehicle ever to successfully climb to the sixth station of Mount Fuji, reaching an elevation of about 7,840 feet. That achievement quickly caught the attention of Japanese police forces, which soon placed an order for 289 units.

Still, full production didn’t officially begin until 1953. That was also the year Toyota introduced the name “Land Cruiser,” created to clearly separate the vehicle from its American inspiration.

Just two years later, the SUV received major upgrades and became the Land Cruiser 20 Series. One of the biggest improvements was the introduction of the new F-Series engine. That engine family proved so durable and reliable that it remained in production until 1992.

The Land Cruiser 20 became a major success. By 1957, it accounted for more than 38% of Japan’s total automotive exports.

Comfort Became Just as Important

The Land Cruiser 40 Series was the first model in the lineup that offered not only serious off-road capability, but also genuine everyday comfort. It stayed in production for an impressive 24 years.

By the late 1960s, growing demand pushed Toyota to rethink what buyers wanted from an SUV. Customers no longer wanted just toughness—they also wanted comfort, practicality, and family-friendly design.

That shift led to the launch of the FJ55 in 1967, featuring a much longer wheelbase and a stronger focus on passenger comfort. But Toyota kept pushing further.

In 1980, the company introduced the Land Cruiser 60 Series, a model that offered a level of refinement that rivaled some sedans of its era. It proved that an SUV could be both highly capable off-road and genuinely comfortable on the highway.

Quality Became the Final Piece

One of the most important reasons behind the Land Cruiser’s legendary reputation is Toyota’s strict approach to durability and quality.

Starting in the late 1970s, Toyota followed a simple but powerful rule: no new Land Cruiser could enter production unless it outperformed the previous model in long-term durability and service life.

That philosophy helped shape the Land Cruiser into far more than just another SUV. It became a symbol of reliability, toughness, and trust—qualities that continue to define the name today.

More than 70 years after the first BJ prototype, the Land Cruiser remains one of the most respected off-road vehicles ever made—and one of Toyota’s greatest success stories.
