The new Luxeed RX crossover, developed by Chery and Huawei, has opened for orders in China. It stands out with several unusual engineering solutions and bears a resemblance to the Ferrari Purosangue, while undercutting high-end performance SUVs by a wide margin.
The Luxeed RX also shares some visual similarities with the Xiaomi YU7, its direct competitor. However, the new Chery-backed model sets itself apart with sophisticated aerodynamics more commonly associated with expensive supercars.
The body incorporates 10 separate air ducts. Two vents are positioned in each of the front fenders, while additional openings are integrated into the bumpers, rear glass, and hollow exterior mirrors. The setup is designed to improve stability at different speeds and during aggressive cornering.
The base Luxeed RX uses a single rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 377 horsepower. An optional front motor adds another 218 hp, giving the crossover all-wheel drive. Buyers can choose from three battery packs with different capacities, providing a claimed driving range of roughly 418 to 530 miles on China's testing cycle.
Despite its advanced hardware, the Luxeed RX starts at 299,800 yuan, or about $41,600 at current exchange rates.
Another major feature is the crossover's four lidar sensors. That configuration remains unusual even in China's rapidly developing EV market, including among vehicles in Huawei's HIMA ecosystem. For comparison, the Maextro V800 minivan, another model developed with Huawei, uses six lidar units.
The Luxeed RX also has 36 additional sensors. Together, the hardware supports Level 3 automated driving, under which the driver does not have to keep their hands on the steering wheel continuously when the system is operating under appropriate conditions.
The RX also uses redundant systems for its key functions. If the steering, braking system, or sensors supporting the automated-driving system experience a failure, the vehicle is designed to remain stable and continue operating rather than suddenly losing control.
The Luxeed RX measures 197.6 inches long and rides on a 118.1-inch wheelbase. It is 78.? inches wide and 62.4 inches tall, with 20- to 22-inch wheels available. At the rear, a full-width light bar uses 10,000 LEDs. The active rear diffuser can adjust the angle of its aerodynamic elements based on the vehicle's speed and steering angle.
The crossover is also equipped with a 26-inch head-up display, an 8.88-inch passenger touchscreen, and a 16.1-inch central display. Sporty front seats are joined by additional screens built into the doors, which can display images from the vehicle's blind spots.
