Automakers generally recommend using B mode on long downhill stretches and mountainous roads, while on flat roads it can make driving less efficient and less smooth.
Most drivers are familiar with the letters on an automatic transmission selector. Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive are used almost every day, while other markings may rarely come into play.
One of those less familiar settings is B. So what exactly does it do, and when should drivers use it?
The B position isn't simply another forward-driving gear. Instead, it increases deceleration when the driver lifts off the accelerator, reducing the need to rely on the conventional brakes.
The letter B generally stands for "brake." The way the system works, however, depends on the type of powertrain.
In vehicles with conventional gas engines, B mode uses engine braking to help slow the vehicle. Toyota's technical documentation explains that selecting B increases the braking effect produced by the powertrain, helping reduce the load on the vehicle's friction brakes.
Electrified vehicles work somewhat differently. In hybrids and EVs, selecting B can increase regenerative braking. The electric motor switches into generator mode as the vehicle slows, creating resistance that helps reduce speed while sending some of that energy back to the battery.
B mode can be particularly useful in hybrids because it can increase the amount of regenerative braking when the driver lifts off the accelerator.
As the vehicle's momentum turns the electric motor during deceleration, the motor acts as a generator. Some of the vehicle's kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and returned to the battery.
That can provide two benefits: more energy is recovered, while the conventional brake pads and rotors do less work. On long descents, this can also help keep the friction brakes from getting excessively hot.
The best time to select B is when you need sustained deceleration, particularly on steep downhill roads or in mountainous terrain.
Without additional engine or regenerative braking, a vehicle can pick up speed quickly on a long descent, forcing the driver to stay on the brake pedal for extended periods.
B mode can make it easier to maintain a controlled speed while reducing reliance on the conventional braking system. In hybrids and EVs, it can also increase regenerative braking during prolonged deceleration.
Using B mode all the time isn't what automakers generally recommend. It isn't intended to replace Drive during normal driving on flat roads or highways.
On level pavement, increased deceleration every time the driver lifts off the accelerator can make the vehicle feel less smooth and reduce its natural coasting ability. In a gas-powered vehicle, that can also hurt fuel economy. In a hybrid, it may make everyday driving feel more abrupt than necessary.
For normal city driving and highway cruising on relatively flat roads, Drive (D) remains the appropriate setting.
The bottom line is simple: B mode has a specific job. Save it for situations where sustained deceleration is useful, especially long downhill grades and mountainous roads, rather than leaving it engaged during everyday driving.
