First Renderings Preview the Next-Generation BMW X6

The next BMW X6 is expected to retain its signature coupe-like profile while sharing much of its technology and engineering with the upcoming X5.

First Renderings Preview the Next-Generation BMW X6

The first unofficial renderings of the next-generation BMW X6 offer an early glimpse at what the luxury coupe-SUV could look like. While the images are speculative, they suggest the new model will retain its signature sloping roofline while borrowing many styling cues from the next-generation BMW X5.

The BMW X6 made its debut in 2008 and quickly became one of the pioneers of the coupe-SUV segment. Based on the X5, it traded some practicality for a more dramatic design and sportier character. The model helped create an entirely new niche in the premium SUV market, inspiring competitors around the world—including several Chinese automakers—to develop similar vehicles.

Now, independent designers have released their vision of the next X6.

The renderings were published by the AutoYa YouTube channel in a video just over two minutes long, showcasing the SUV from multiple angles and in several exterior colors. As with any unofficial rendering, the final production vehicle could look significantly different.

Based on the illustrations, the next X6 will remain closely related to the upcoming X5. The designers depict the two SUVs side by side, with nearly identical styling from the front fascia to the B-pillars.

The biggest visual difference remains the X6's trademark coupe roofline. A steeper rear window, redesigned rear quarter panels, smaller side windows, and a unique liftgate preserve the model's fastback silhouette.

Aside from those changes, much of the body structure and engineering is expected to be shared with the X5. That likely includes the platform, powertrain lineup, safety systems, onboard technology, and many exterior body panels.

As with the current model, the sleek roofline will come with a tradeoff. The X6 is expected to offer less cargo space than the X5, while rear-seat passengers may have slightly less headroom.

Inside, the next-generation X6 is also expected to closely mirror the new X5. The cabin is rumored to feature BMW's upcoming panoramic display stretching across the base of the windshield, a separate central infotainment touchscreen, an optional passenger display, a new four-spoke steering wheel, a redesigned center console, and updated controls.

Interior materials, trim, and available equipment are also expected to be largely shared with its X5 sibling.

BMW has not revealed any technical details yet, but the X6 will likely inherit the same powertrain portfolio as the next-generation X5. That lineup is expected to include mild-hybrid gasoline and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid variants, and fully electric versions. BMW also plans to add a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain to the X5 family at a later stage, raising the possibility that the technology could eventually find its way into the X6 as well.

The X6 is poised to play an even more important role in BMW's lineup than before. With the company reportedly planning to discontinue the X4 after the current generation, the X6 and the smaller X2 will become BMW's primary coupe-style crossovers.

If current expectations prove accurate, the next-generation BMW X6 could make its global debut within the next two years.
