Audi Reveals EV With Unusual Door Handles

Audi has used the A2 name before. From 1999 to 2005, it was attached to a small hatchback whose design influences can still be seen in the new EV.

The A2 E-Tron also gets a distinctive front end, with slim daytime running lights and a “smiling” lower air intake integrated into the bumper. To improve aerodynamic efficiency, conventional door handles have been replaced by tiny hooks that sit flush with the beltline.

Inside, the cabin takes a minimalist approach. The dashboard features a slightly curved display panel combining two screens in front of the driver, along with a dedicated shelf for a smartphone. The transmission selector is mounted on the steering column.

Every version of the Audi A2 E-Tron uses a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Buyers will be able to choose from four power outputs: 170, 190, 231 or 326 horsepower.

The entry-level model will use a 52-kWh battery and offer up to 262 miles of range, while the most powerful version gets an 84-kWh pack and can travel up to 391 miles on a charge.

European dealers are expected to begin selling the new EV in December. German pricing has already been announced, starting at about $44,100 for the entry-level version.
