Toyota Technician Walks Away After Viral TikTok Exposes a Nearly 3x Pay Cut on One Repair

A Toyota dealership technician in the U.S. quit his job after management allegedly asked him to delete a viral social media video criticizing how technicians are paid for repairs covered by third-party warranty companies.

The dispute started with a repair on a 2019 Toyota Tundra that required replacing the fuel tank. The procedure carries a standard labor time of 2.3 hours.

However, the third-party extended-warranty provider refused to pay the standard amount and instead reduced the approved labor time to Toyota's factory warranty rate of 0.8 hours. That cut the technician's pay for the repair by nearly two-thirds.

The technician described the situation in a TikTok video, which quickly gained attention. More than 3,000 comments were posted in support of him.

Dealership management then asked him to remove the video. He refused and submitted his resignation.

The incident highlights broader problems with the flat-rate pay system used by many automotive repair shops, where technicians' earnings are tied directly to predetermined labor times for specific repairs.

When third-party warranty contracts reduce the amount of labor time approved for a job, technicians can see their compensation drop even when the actual repair requires significantly more time. The system can add financial pressure to repair technicians and contribute to burnout and difficulties retaining skilled workers.
