China and U.S. Sales Pressure Volvo Into Major 2026 Financial Reset
The automaker officially revised its financial outlook after weaker Chinese sales and a slower U.S. market recovery.
The automaker has officially revised its financial outlook following weaker sales in China and a slower-than-expected recovery in the U.S. market, while maintaining its goal of reaching an 8% EBIT margin. Company executives expect the third quarter to be particularly difficult for both earnings and cash flow.
A previously announced leadership change is still scheduled for 2027, but worsening market conditions have pushed more immediate financial concerns to the forefront. The automaker is now focused on adjusting its expectations for the year as sales continue to fall short of earlier projections.

Despite the downward revisions, company executives said the short-term market environment will not change the brand's long-term strategy. The automaker still plans to achieve a sustained positive cash flow, while its EBIT margin target remains at 8%.
The automaker also officially confirmed that its previously announced 2026 targets for sales volume and cash flow will not be met. Several factors have contributed to the change in expectations.
Key challenges identified by the company include:
- A significant deterioration in China's auto market
- A slower-than-expected recovery in U.S. sales
- Higher raw material costs
- Increased currency volatility
- Higher depreciation expenses
Actual sales have come in below the levels included in the company's original plan, forcing executives to lower their expectations for the full year.
Company representatives expect the third quarter to be especially challenging. Both earnings and cash flow are likely to face significant pressure as higher material costs and currency fluctuations combine with a broader cooling in market conditions.
Taken together, those factors have created a tougher operating environment and forced the automaker to make a substantial adjustment to its 2026 financial outlook.
