The Swedish automaker is looking to reignite consumer interest with a simplified base model and a stylish all-black trim.
The all-electric Volvo EX30 debuted in mid-2023, and a year ago it spawned the more rugged Cross Country variant. However, by the end of 2025, demand for the electric crossover had dropped by 23 percent. As a result, the already loss-making Swedish brand has decided to spark renewed interest with the launch of a more affordable entry-level version and a trendy Black Edition.
Since the EX30 is still a relatively new model, a full-scale facelift isn’t on the table yet. Updates are limited to targeted improvements. For example, the EV now features vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing owners to power external devices using a special adapter. Volvo has also announced an update to the infotainment system’s software interface. Both upgrades will be available to previously delivered vehicles via over-the-air updates.
The most significant change is the introduction of a more affordable EX30 variant equipped with the least powerful electric motor in the lineup. The rear-mounted motor produces 150 horsepower, while a 51-kWh battery provides up to 339 km (211 miles) of range on the WLTP cycle. A larger 69-kWh battery is also available, extending range to up to 476 km (296 miles).
The existing versions remain in the lineup. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive model with 272 horsepower can be paired with either a 51-kWh or 69-kWh battery, offering 344 km (214 miles) and 480 km (298 miles) of range, respectively. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version delivers a combined 428 horsepower and, with its 69-kWh battery, can travel up to 460 km (286 miles) on a single charge.
Black Edition variants are already available across most Volvo models, and now the smallest crossover in the lineup joins the club. Buyers can choose from three exterior colors: black, white, and gray. Chrome exterior accents have been replaced with gloss-black trim, including the 19-inch wheels, the front badge, and the rear model lettering. Inside, the cabin features dark Nordico upholstery with contrasting stitching and matching dark trim.
In addition, all EX30 trims can now be ordered with a Black Interior package that brings the same dark cabin treatment. A Harvest option is also available, featuring light-colored fabric upholstery for the seats and door panels, a Nordico-trimmed dashboard, dark decorative inlays, and a black headliner.
Pricing has not yet been announced. Currently, the Volvo EX30 starts at the equivalent of $47,500 and tops out at about $62,000 in Sweden. Updated vehicles will be produced at the company’s plant in Belgium, where assembly began in April 2025 to avoid European tariffs on battery-powered vehicles manufactured in China.
