iSeeCars releases its list of the best all-wheel-drive vehicles for 2026.
All-wheel drive in 2026 is no longer reserved for rugged off-road machines. Once closely associated with crossovers and SUVs, AWD technology is now widely available in sedans, hatchbacks, and premium passenger cars. Automotive analytics platform iSeeCars recently released a new study identifying the top AWD vehicles of the year, evaluating models across three main criteria: reliability, safety, and long-term value retention.
In the compact segment, the Mazda3—both the hatchback and sedan—takes the top spot, with each version earning a score of 8.7. Close behind is the Subaru WRX, known for its strong performance credentials and standard all-wheel-drive setup. Among entry-level luxury cars, the Lexus IS 300 and IS 350 rank at the top, along with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class—longtime competitors in the segment that continue to deliver consistently high quality.
In the midsize category, the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata lead the pack with identical scores of 8.1, followed by the Subaru Legacy. In the premium midsize segment, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class once again reinforces its reputation as a benchmark model, sharing the top tier of the ranking with the Lexus ES 250 and the coupe version of the E-Class. Among large sedans, the Dodge Charger takes the lead, while in the full-size luxury class the Lexus LS 500 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe finish close together near the top of the list.
It’s worth noting that AWD systems have evolved significantly in recent years and now have only a minimal impact on fuel economy. The typical penalty amounts to roughly 0.2–0.4 gallons per 62 miles, making all-wheel drive an attractive option for drivers in colder climates or regions with unpredictable road conditions. That said, it’s important to distinguish AWD from traditional four-wheel drive. The latter is still designed primarily for serious off-road use and is typically found on body-on-frame SUVs and trucks.
The latest iSeeCars ranking highlights just how broad the AWD passenger-car market has become in 2026. Many of these vehicles offer SUV-like traction and dependability while keeping operating costs lower. As a result, all-wheel drive is becoming more accessible to a wider audience—from families looking for year-round confidence to drivers who want a sporty, stable car capable of handling any season.
