Why Some Drivers Keep Bay Leaves in Their Cars — It’s Not Just About Superstition

Can a common kitchen spice help repel bugs, freshen your car’s interior, or even help you relax behind the wheel?

Why Some Drivers Keep Bay Leaves in Their Cars — It’s Not Just About Superstition

Some drivers keep bay leaves inside their cars, treating them as a good-luck charm or an old-fashioned superstition. But this common kitchen spice also has practical household uses, including adding a natural scent to enclosed spaces. Not every claim about bay leaves, however, is backed by solid scientific evidence.

The habit of keeping bay leaves in a vehicle has caught on among drivers for different reasons. Some consider the leaves a symbol of protection on the road, while others hope their distinctive aroma will freshen the cabin. The key is separating traditional uses from benefits that have not been scientifically established.

Bay Leaves as a Natural Air Freshener

One reason drivers put bay leaves in their cars is their distinctive, spicy aroma. Dried leaves can release a subtle scent, offering a simple alternative to some artificial air fresheners.

However, bay leaves won't eliminate the source of an unpleasant odor. If your car smells damp, musty, or moldy, inspect the floor mats, upholstery, air conditioning system, and any areas where water might be getting inside.

Simply placing a few leaves in the cabin won't replace proper cleaning and drying.

Can Bay Leaves Keep Bugs Out of Your Car?

Bay leaves contain essential oils and aromatic compounds that can affect the behavior of certain insects. That's one reason the leaves have traditionally been used around the home as a folk remedy for household pests.

Some drivers tuck dried leaves into the glove box, door pockets, or under the seats, hoping to deter ants and other small insects.

There's no reliable evidence that this method will keep bugs out of a car, though, so bay leaves shouldn't be treated as a dependable insect repellent.

If you discover insects inside your vehicle, start by removing crumbs and food scraps, thoroughly cleaning the interior, and identifying how the pests are getting in.

Can Bay Leaf Aroma Help You Relax Behind the Wheel?

Plant-based aromatic compounds are often used in aromatherapy, but claims that bay leaves inside a car can reduce anxiety or help drivers manage stress should be treated cautiously.

There's insufficient evidence that a few dried leaves produce a meaningful calming effect or improve concentration while driving.

Smell is also highly subjective. An aroma that one person finds pleasant may bother someone else or cause discomfort.

Safe driving requires your full attention. If you're feeling tense during a trip, pull over somewhere safe and take a break rather than relying on a scent to help you relax.

How to Use Bay Leaves in Your Car

If you enjoy the smell, place a few dried bay leaves in a small paper sachet and keep it in the glove box or another enclosed compartment. Replace them when the aroma begins to fade.

Avoid placing leaves near the pedals, on the dashboard, or anywhere they could fall and interfere with vehicle controls. Never put them in an airbag deployment zone, either.

Bay leaves can provide a mild, natural fragrance, but they aren't a substitute for proper vehicle maintenance, proven pest-control methods, or safe driving habits.
