Small scratches under car door handles are common, but drivers can remove them easily at home.
Sooner or later, almost every car develops small scratches under the door handles. Rings, fingernails, and everyday use gradually leave marks in the paint. While these scratches rarely affect the vehicle mechanically, they can make an otherwise well-kept car look worn.
Preventing them completely is difficult, but the good news is that light scratches can usually be removed at home with basic supplies and a little patience.
Before doing anything else, the vehicle should be washed thoroughly. Dirt and sand particles trapped on the paint can cause additional damage during polishing. Using a quality automotive shampoo helps remove contaminants from the clear coat more safely.
After washing, dry the area completely and degrease the paint around the door handle. You don’t necessarily need to clean the entire vehicle again—just the handle and the surrounding paintwork.
Many experienced drivers recommend repeating the wash around the handle before starting the repair process. Once the surface is clean, wipe it with a microfiber towel to remove any remaining moisture.
Minor scratches in the clear coat can often be eliminated with paint polish. Apply a small amount of polishing compound directly onto the scratched area. A microfiber cloth works well for spreading the product evenly across the surface.
Once the compound is applied, begin polishing using repeated circular or back-and-forth motions. Gentle pressure is usually enough—there’s no need to press too hard.
After the first pass, wipe the area dry with a clean microfiber towel and check the result. If the scratches are still visible, repeat the polishing process two or three more times, depending on how deep the marks are.
A small LED flashlight can help highlight remaining scratches and show whether the polishing is working.
Once the scratches are removed or significantly reduced, it’s a good idea to protect the area to prevent future damage. Many drivers apply clear protective film under the door handles, which acts as a barrier against fingernails, keys, and rings.
These nearly invisible films are inexpensive and can dramatically reduce new scratches from appearing over time. For many car owners, this small extra step keeps the paint around door handles looking clean and glossy for years.
