Elon Musk hints Tesla is developing a mysterious new vehicle that could replace traditional electric minivans.
A new comment from Elon Musk has stirred up fresh speculation about what Tesla might be planning next. Musk recently said the company is working on “something much cooler than a minivan,” instantly sparking debate among fans and industry observers.
The timing of the statement is notable. The market for spacious electric vehicles remains surprisingly thin, especially in the United States. At the same time, the departure of larger Tesla options like the Tesla Model X from some buyers’ consideration—and the limited practicality of a three-row Tesla Model Y—has left families with fewer choices than they once had.
Over the past few years, Tesla has shifted much of its focus toward software, services, and autonomous driving technology. That shift led some analysts to wonder whether the company might slow down the introduction of entirely new vehicle models.
Yet demand for larger family-oriented vehicles hasn’t disappeared. Traditional minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica continue to hold strong sales in the U.S., and interest in three-row vehicles remains steady even as birth rates decline. Many American buyers still want roomy interiors, flexible seating, and road-trip practicality—features currently missing from Tesla’s lineup.
Tesla fans have repeatedly suggested that the company build a true electric minivan. Some even proposed using the platform from the Tesla Cybertruck, which has struggled to fully meet expectations in the pickup segment.
Design rumors have added even more intrigue. Inside Tesla’s design studio, led by Franz von Holzhausen, sketches reportedly showed a possible “CyberSUV.” The designer himself acknowledged last year that Tesla had explored the idea of both a CyberSUV and a smaller version of the Cybertruck. Since then, however, there have been no official updates, leaving many observers unsure whether those ideas are still alive.
Musk has previously tried to address the demand for a family vehicle by pointing out that the Cybertruck’s spacious rear seat can fit multiple child seats, suggesting it could serve some of the same purposes as a minivan. For many families, though, that explanation falls short. A traditional minivan typically offers sliding doors, easier access to the third row, and cabin flexibility that pickup trucks simply don’t provide.
When asked again recently about the possibility of a Tesla minivan, Musk responded with another teaser: something “cooler than a minivan” is on the way. As usual, he offered no details.
That leaves plenty of room for speculation. Some enthusiasts believe Tesla could revive the rumored CyberSUV concept. Others point to the Tesla Robovan, a futuristic autonomous vehicle Tesla revealed alongside the Tesla Cybercab in 2024.
Still, the idea of owning a fully autonomous urban shuttle doesn’t excite every buyer. For many drivers, the hope is simply for a practical, roomy electric family vehicle that blends everyday usability with Tesla’s technology.
Whatever Musk is hinting at, one thing seems clear: if Tesla truly plans to deliver something “cooler than a minivan,” expectations from the American market will be high.
