A new artificial intelligence-powered system called SmartBay can complete a full tire change in just 30 minutes, offering a potential solution for auto shops struggling with a severe shortage of skilled mechanics.

The technology was designed to automate one of the most physically demanding jobs in the automotive service industry.

SmartBay can independently inspect a vehicle, remove and replace wheels, and balance tires with minimal human involvement. The AI system adapts to different vehicle types while collecting real-time operational data throughout the process.

According to the developers, the robot completes work in roughly half the time required by a traditional technician, who may need more than an hour for the same service. Despite occupying a footprint of about 12 feet, the system allows a single employee to oversee operations across three service bays simultaneously.

Productivity increases dramatically as well. SmartBay can reportedly process up to 24 tires per hour compared to roughly four tires handled by a conventional technician.

Leasing the equipment costs dealerships approximately $4,900 per month — significantly less than hiring an experienced specialist in many U.S. markets. Developers claim the system can triple overall shop efficiency.

The technology was created by entrepreneur Andy Chalofsky, founder of Traction Tire and SimpleTire.

Chalofsky believes the tire service industry has needed modernization for decades.

“Until now, it was basically a guy with a sledgehammer working on your car like it was the Stone Age,” he said.

He added that he has always searched for a more convenient and customer-friendly approach to tire service.
