BYD won a major court case against a Chinese EV blogger accused of spreading misleading claims about vehicle reliability.
Chinese automotive giant BYD has secured a legal victory against popular local content creator Long Ge Talks EVs. A Chinese court ruled that several of the blogger’s published statements were inaccurate and ordered him to pay the automaker 2 million yuan — roughly $293,000 — in damages.
The lawsuit centered around videos and online posts discussing repairs involving BYD battery packs, electric motors, and electronic systems. According to the court, the blogger distributed false information that harmed BYD’s reputation and negatively affected public perception of the brand’s electric vehicles in China.
Following the ruling, the blogger released a public apology video acknowledging that some of his statements were inaccurate and may have misled viewers.
This is not the first time BYD has pursued legal action against bloggers or influencers. The company has increasingly relied on lawsuits and court rulings to combat what it describes as unverified or misleading information about its vehicles and EV technology.
The issue carries significant weight in China’s rapidly expanding EV market, where competition between automakers has become extremely intense. Reports involving battery reliability, driving range, or repair costs can directly influence consumer confidence and vehicle sales.
BYD says it remains open to objective criticism and independent vehicle reviews. However, the company also made clear that it plans to continue taking legal action against individuals or media creators who spread false claims about its products or technology.
