In late 2023, electronics giant Xiaomi made a rapid entrance into the automotive industry with the debut of its first model, the SU7 sedan. It was followed by the Xiaomi YU7 crossover, but in nearly three years the Chinese company had yet to launch a sub-brand. That has now changed, as Xiaomi has announced its first automotive sub-brand, SkyNomad, which will focus exclusively on hybrid vehicles.

The tech giant has already released official artwork showing the Sky Nomad name. Advertising for the new brand is already appearing on digital billboards across China. In addition, SkyNomad has launched an official account on WeChat, where its profile reveals the brand’s approximate logo, signature typeface, and its Chinese transliteration, Pengcheng.

Translated from English, "Sky Nomad" means exactly what its name suggests, making it no surprise that the new brand will focus on long-range hybrids with an adventure-oriented theme. About a year ago, prototypes of a large Xiaomi crossover with unusually boxy styling and what was believed to be a hybrid powertrain were spotted on Chinese roads. At the time, they were thought to be a new flagship model for the Xiaomi brand. It has now become clear that the company chose to separate its battery-electric and hybrid vehicles under different brands.

More recent spy photos and insider leaks from China point to at least three SkyNomad models scheduled to debut in the near future. The lineup is expected to include a compact crossover measuring less than 16.4 feet long, a large crossover approximately 17.1 to 17.4 feet in length, and a touring version equipped with a power-operated rooftop tent.

According to Chinese media reports, SkyNomad models will use a series-hybrid powertrain paired with an unusually large 70-kWh battery pack. That battery is expected to provide an all-electric driving range of approximately 249 to 311 miles. Total driving range could reach an impressive 932 miles. In keeping with the brand's adventure-focused philosophy, the crossovers are expected to feature spacious cabins with flexible interior configurations and convenience features such as a refrigerator and a television.

Given the advanced stage of development of the test prototypes and the official announcement of the new brand, Xiaomi is expected to hold the full debut of the SkyNomad hybrid crossovers within the next few months.
