This DIY Bus Conversion Is a Mix Between Off-Grid Home and Rolling Festival and Entertainment Hub

DIY bus conversions have become a popular way to build an affordable home on wheels, but not every project follows the familiar tiny-house formula. Some are built around a specific way of life, and DABigBlueBus is a perfect example.

This isn't simply an old school bus transformed into a compact RV. Dom Piselli designed it as a mobile entertainment space for sporting events, tailgating, music festivals, road trips, and hanging out with friends. It still has the essentials for everyday living, but socializing and having a good time clearly come first.

The build is based on a 2006 Thomas Saf-T-Liner powered by a Caterpillar C7 engine and Allison transmission. Piselli is still working on the bus, but the project already demonstrates just how far creativity can take an aging vehicle.

Piselli drew inspiration from bus-lifer Chuck Cassady's YouTube videos and combined DIY ideas with reclaimed materials and furniture adapted from conventional homes. The result falls somewhere between an off-grid tiny home and a fully equipped mobile party headquarters.

Outside, the bus received a professional paint job from Maaco after Piselli handled the sanding and bodywork himself. The blue exterior is accented with black around the windows and rails, while oversized purple LED spotlights and purple marker lights reinforce its festival-ready character. Roughly 200 feet (60 meters) of LED rope lighting also wraps around the bus, changing colors and reacting to music.

The original bus door was replaced with a custom-built version made from cedar planks and glass panels. Piselli also removed several original windows and filled those openings with riveted galvannealed steel panels. Up top are 480 watts of solar panels, Starlink connectivity, decorative snowboards, and posts intended for a future roof deck.

A rear ladder makes it easy to reach the roof, while backup cameras and a motorcycle carrier mounted to a Curt trailer hitch add practicality. The exterior also features a hot-water outdoor shower, four Bose speakers, and hooks for tapestries and shade awnings. A small duck mascot sits on the hood alongside a green sprout, a playful reference to festival culture.

Because the bus wasn't intended to serve as a traditional full-time home, the interior doesn't follow the usual layout found in many bus conversions. There isn't a strict division between private and communal spaces. Instead, Piselli prioritized entertainment and gathering, with plenty of seating, a desk that doubles as a DJ booth, large counters for drinks and snacks, colorful RGB ceiling lights, and a powerful surround-sound system.

Keeping expenses under control was another part of the strategy. Piselli relied heavily on free roadside materials and modular IKEA furniture. Even the wood used for portions of the floor and ceiling was rescued after being left outside a house and given a second life inside the bus.

The first section of the interior is a spacious lounge with two long benches facing one another. It's designed for groups rather than solitude, giving friends plenty of room to sit and hang out. Large drawers beneath the benches provide storage, while overhead wooden shelves make use of otherwise wasted space. When it's time to sleep, pull-out wooden slats connect the benches and turn them into a queen-size bed.

The side walls feature eye-catching artwork created using fractal wood burning. The technique uses high-voltage electricity to produce branching, lightning-like patterns across wood. Combined with the extensive use of natural wood throughout the interior, the treatment gives the bus a distinctive look that feels highly personal.

At 6 feet 7 inches tall, Piselli had to pay particular attention to headroom. Rather than taking on a complicated roof-raising project, he cut away part of the interior ceiling and raised it by roughly 10 inches in the central section, where the extra clearance matters most. Two skylights provide additional height while bringing natural light into the cabin.

Beside the lounge is a dedicated workstation with a desk and two monitors. The desktop can be raised to reveal storage underneath and can also serve as a standing desk.

For the kitchen, Piselli installed IKEA cabinets and built the countertop from leftover framing lumber, turning it into an attractive butcher-block work surface. The setup includes a sink, a tall refrigerator with a freezer, and plug-in cooking appliances. Opposite the main kitchen is another cabinet containing the electrical equipment. Its stainless-steel countertop doubles as extra food-preparation space.

Farther toward the back is a closet for clothing. Its standard door also functions as the bedroom door when opened, providing privacy for the rear section. Instead of creating a conventional permanent bedroom, Piselli designed the back of the bus as a VIP-style lounge, complete with facing benches, a wall-mounted TV, purple lighting, two fans, and multiple speakers.

Like the seating at the front, the rear benches were built from reclaimed wood and can be converted into another queen-size bed. Piselli also retained the original rear door, which can be opened for ventilation, views, or access to the roof.

There is no bathroom inside because the bus was never designed specifically for full-time living.

Entertainment, meanwhile, is clearly one of its biggest strengths. The conversion features roughly 12 speakers and two subwoofers spread throughout the interior and exterior, with four speakers mounted outside. Starlink provides internet connectivity, while a couple of TVs and color-changing RGB puck lights add even more atmosphere. The interior lighting can synchronize with the music, turning the bus into a rolling light show.

All that equipment runs on a substantial electrical setup featuring a 920Ah Victron battery bank and a 3,000-watt Victron inverter. The bus also has a diesel heater, a 9,000-BTU mini-split air conditioner, and a 75-gallon freshwater tank.

DABigBlueBus may still be a work in progress, but it already proves that a school bus doesn't have to become another conventional tiny home. With the right mix of creativity, reclaimed materials, and a clear sense of purpose, it can become something far more unusual: a self-contained mobile base camp built for music, festivals, friends, and life on the road.
