This is the monster on wheels that has terrorized GTA players since 2017 with its imposing size and heavy armor.
Latvian coachbuilder Dartz, known for its outrageous automotive creations, has taken on a new ambitious project: building a full-size SUV inspired by the fictional HVY Nightshark armored vehicle from Grand Theft Auto.
It’s the same four-wheeled monster that has roamed the virtual streets of GTA since 2017, intimidating players with its massive dimensions and armored exterior. A private investor has reportedly put up about $1 million to turn the video game fantasy into a real vehicle, and the project is now in the final stages of assembly.
As mentioned, the Nightshark made its debut in Grand Theft Auto Online in August 2017 as part of the Gunrunning update. In the game, it’s more than just a heavy-duty SUV. It’s essentially a fortress on wheels, featuring four-wheel drive, heavy armor and an integrated weapons system.
Dartz’s engineers are aiming to capture that aggressive character as faithfully as possible in the real world while making sure the SUV can actually drive under its own power rather than simply sit on a display stand.
This isn’t the first time a vehicle from Rockstar Games has inspired tuners and automakers. In 2013, shortly before the release of GTA V, Rockstar teamed up with West Coast Customs to build a fully functional prototype of the fictional Bravado Banshee. The project was based on a Dodge Viper, which received a completely redesigned body and a custom interior modeled after the in-game car.
That vehicle was no static prop, either. It was fully drivable and was eventually given away to a fan as part of a promotional campaign.
Dartz’s latest project could become one of the more unusual automotive spectacles of this fall. The public debut of the armored HVY Nightshark is scheduled for November, with Miami chosen as the venue. The timing is no coincidence: the unveiling is being planned around one of the biggest events in the gaming world this year—the long-awaited release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the builders of the real-world Nightshark are hoping to capitalize on the attention surrounding that highly anticipated week.
