BMW recalls nearly 28,000 vehicles over driveshaft connection issue

BMW is recalling 27,720 vehicles in the United States because a connection between the driveshaft and rear differential could become damaged.

The recall covers certain 2022-2026 BMW 840i and 840i xDrive, 2021-2023 540i, 540i xDrive and M550i xDrive, and 2024-2026 750e xDrive models.

According to the recall notice, damage to the driveshaft-to-differential connection could cut power to the rear wheels. In some situations, the problem could also allow the vehicle to roll away.

BMW dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential. Depending on what they find, technicians will either apply adhesive to the connection or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential. The repairs will be performed free of charge.

BMW expects to mail recall notification letters to affected owners on October 2, 2026.

Owners who have questions about the recall can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers for vehicles included in the recall are expected to become searchable through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website beginning October 2, 2026.
