An extremely unusual six-wheeled conversion of Ford’s compact crossover has landed on the Bring a Trailer auction block.
The Ford EcoSport is a compact crossover that was never exactly known for its size or practicality. But one of its former U.S. owners apparently wanted something much bigger and turned a 2019 EcoSport into a six-wheeled, three-axle SUV. The resulting automotive Frankenstein was recently listed for sale on Bring a Trailer.
The biggest change from a stock EcoSport is the addition of a third axle at the rear. To make the conversion possible, a section of the body was cut out immediately behind the rear doors. An extended section of the body and an additional chassis structure were then welded into place, giving the crossover another pair of wheels.
The rear of the vehicle was also fitted with a roof spoiler styled after those found on sports cars.
Despite the extensive exterior modifications, the cabin retains the equipment found in the factory Titanium trim. Inside are black leather seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat with six-way adjustment, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
A Bang & Olufsen audio system handles the sound, while the rest of the interior retains the familiar layout of a standard Ford EcoSport.
The powertrain was left unchanged by the conversion. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Duratec engine producing 166 horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque.
The engine is paired with a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The EcoSport has all-wheel drive, but the drivetrain sends power only to the front and center axles.
Based on the vehicle's construction, the added rear axle does not appear to be driven. The transmission was also not modified to account for the additional load created by the third axle and the extra weight.
The vehicle's history includes several major changes. According to the Carfax report and registration records, the EcoSport was involved in a front-end collision in November 2019 and subsequently received a rebuilt title.
The crossover underwent its extensive six-wheel conversion in the years that followed. The current owner purchased it last year, and the odometer now shows just over 46,600 miles.
At the time of publication, the highest bid on the Bring a Trailer auction stood at $7,000. The auction still has two days to go, so the final price could climb before bidding ends.
