Subaru has made targeted updates to two related models in its home market: the Impreza sedan and raised Crosstrek hatchback. The changes make both vehicles better.
Following the update, the Impreza has cemented its status as an affordable people's car. After the refresh, the model starts at about $18,200 at current exchange rates.
Subaru has revised the Impreza's equipment, removing the mild-hybrid system. Buyers can now choose a single trim with a 2.0-liter boxer engine. It produces up to 154 hp and 193 Nm of torque. It is paired with a continuously variable transmission. All of the power is sent to the rear wheels as standard, while buyers can add all-wheel drive for an extra cost. The claimed combined fuel economy is 33.1 mpg.
Another key change is the addition of a navigation system. However, Subaru simplified the base trim, allowing it to lower the starting price. The Japanese company moved some standard equipment to the options list. Buyers now have to pay extra for LED or adaptive headlights, power front seats with memory, power-folding exterior mirrors, rear fog lights, and a heated steering wheel.
The Impreza's exterior remains unchanged. The hatchback is 176.2 inches long, 70.1 inches wide, and 58.3 inches tall. Its wheelbase measures 105.1 inches.
The Crosstrek, by contrast, has become better equipped. After the update, the crossover starts at about $24,400 at current exchange rates.
The Crosstrek now gets a full hybrid powertrain instead of the mild-hybrid system used by its predecessor. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter boxer engine paired with two electric motors. Combined output reaches 194 hp. The crossover comes with a CVT and all-wheel drive. Optimized control software has reduced fuel consumption to 46.1 mpg. As part of the update, the Crosstrek also gains a premium Harman Kardon audio system.
The update is intended to differentiate the two vehicles. The Impreza is aimed at drivers who want a simple car with a conventional engine. The Crosstrek is intended for those who want a technologically advanced and fuel-efficient crossover. The two Japanese models will likely receive different updates in other markets, but that has not yet been officially confirmed.
