Crossovers and SUVs are often chosen for their roomy interiors, but you don't necessarily need a large vehicle to travel comfortably. Several modern sedans offer enough legroom and shoulder room to rival some SUVs.
For 2026, the selection ranges from affordable models such as the Hyundai Elantra to full-size luxury sedans from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. These six cars stand out for providing plenty of space for both the driver and passengers, even on long road trips.
Hyundai Elantra
A compact car doesn't automatically mean a cramped cabin. The 2026 Hyundai Elantra is a good example.
The driver and front passenger get about 42.3 inches of legroom, while rear-seat passengers have roughly 38.0 inches. That's a generous amount of space for a compact sedan.
In some interior measurements, the Elantra even has an advantage over Hyundai's smallest crossover, the Venue. Rear-seat legroom, for example, is nearly 4 inches greater in the sedan. Front-seat shoulder room measures about 56.5 inches, while rear passengers get approximately 55.5 inches.
Honda Accord
For drivers who regularly carry adults in the back seat, the Honda Accord is worth a close look.
Its biggest advantage is the spacious second row, which provides about 40.8 inches of rear legroom. Front passengers get approximately 42.3 inches.

The Audi A8 and performance-oriented S8 top this group when it comes to rear-seat legroom for the 2027 model year.
Rear passengers get approximately 44.3 inches of legroom, while those in the front have about 41.5 inches.
The S8 can also be equipped with a four-seat configuration that replaces the center position of the rear bench with a large console. That setup gives the two rear passengers additional personal space and a more executive-style cabin.
For buyers who prioritize interior room but don't want to move into an SUV, these sedans show that a lower, more traditional body style can still provide exceptional passenger space.
