Auto repair professionals reveal which models rarely suffer major failures and which ones repeatedly end up on the lift.
British mechanics have singled out Toyota as the brand that is least likely to show up at a repair shop with major engine problems, while routine maintenance costs remain relatively reasonable for the segment. Mechanic Robert Hanna came to that conclusion after years of working on different vehicles, with the Toyota Yaris equipped with a gas-electric hybrid powertrain standing out as one of his top choices.
Another technician, Charlie Sterrett, agreed with the overall assessment but picked a different Toyota: the Aygo with an automatic transmission.
Both mechanics, however, warn against assuming that a strong reliability record means an owner can ignore routine maintenance. Even dependable vehicles still need regular oil changes, inspections and other scheduled service to remain trouble-free.
Automotive expert Christopher Sharp put the Toyota Yaris through a separate road test, comparing it with the Vauxhall Corsa, a model sold in the United Kingdom.
On paper, the two cars have plenty in common, including front-wheel drive and hybrid powertrains. Behind the wheel, however, their personalities are noticeably different.
According to Sharp, the Yaris feels more confident on winding country roads and more nimble through corners. The trade-off is a firmer suspension, which makes deep potholes and rough pavement more noticeable inside the cabin.
The Corsa is taller, larger and softer-riding. It leans more through corners, but delivers stronger low-end response. During acceleration up to highway speeds, the Toyota can also become louder, although Sharp described both cars as stable and predictable.
The assessment was considerably less favorable when it came to vehicles from Jaguar Land Rover. London repair-shop owner Alex Alfano said Land Rover vehicles regularly arrive at his shop with oil leaks and problems involving their air suspension systems.
The Ingenium diesel engine has drawn particular criticism from the mechanic, who says it has developed a reputation for reliability problems. Owners of the I-Pace electric SUV also visit the shop with issues involving charging systems, high-voltage insulation and climate-control components.
Mechanics caution against labeling an entire brand as either reliable or unreliable, however. A vehicle's long-term durability depends on the specific model and engine, model year, mileage, driving conditions and how consistently the owner follows the recommended maintenance schedule.
