BMW is preparing to add a new generation of lightweight wheels to the options list for the M5 this fall. Developed using an advanced high-pressure casting process, the wheels are designed to be lighter and stronger than conventional alternatives while opening up new possibilities for styling.

According to BMW, the manufacturing technique allows engineers to create wheel designs that were previously difficult or impossible to produce. It also cuts production time in half, making the process more efficient without compromising the finished product.

The new wheels can feature up to 70 flat spokes and an especially aerodynamic profile. BMW says the technology reduces the weight of each wheel by as much as 20% while maintaining the required strength and durability.

Reducing unsprung weight can benefit acceleration, braking, and handling, allowing the suspension to respond more effectively to changes in the road surface. The aerodynamic design may also help reduce air resistance, although the actual benefits will depend on the final wheel configuration.

BMW will offer the new wheels for both the M5 sedan and M5 Touring wagon in 20-inch and 21-inch sizes. Buyers will be able to choose between a gold finish and a carbon-black finish.
