Elon Musk Reveals Tesla’s AI5 Chip Details: Samsung and TSMC Begin U.S. Production, Speed Increases 40-Fold

Last year, Tesla unveiled its new AI5 processor — a custom-designed chip that will power the company’s next-generation Autopilot and artificial intelligence systems.

Tesla’s AI5 marks a major milestone in the company’s chip development strategy. Unlike earlier generations, this processor was developed entirely in-house and is being manufactured by two industry giants — TSMC and Samsung. Both production facilities are located in the United States: TSMC’s plant in Arizona and Samsung’s in Texas. Samsung already has experience working with Tesla, having produced the current AI4 chip, and according to Elon Musk, the company has “done an excellent job.”

During a recent presentation, Musk explained why the AI5 represents a major leap over its predecessor. He said the new chip can perform certain tasks up to 40 times faster than the AI4. This performance boost, Musk noted, comes from Tesla’s highly focused design philosophy — the company builds chips specifically for its own needs, without wasting resources on features it doesn’t require. “We know exactly what we need from the processor,” Musk said, “so we can eliminate everything unnecessary that typically slows development down.”

Tesla plans to produce the AI5 in large volumes, not only for its vehicles but also for use in data centers operated by Musk’s other company, xAI. At present, Tesla trains its neural networks using a combination of AI4 chips and Nvidia hardware, but in the future, it intends to rely more heavily on its own silicon. Musk praised Nvidia’s expertise in designing complex chip architectures, especially those involving multiple logic blocks and interconnections, but emphasized that Tesla is taking its own path — one focused on maximum optimization for specific workloads.

Initially, reports suggested that TSMC would be the sole manufacturer of the AI5. However, this summer it was revealed that Samsung had also secured a major production contract from Tesla worth $16.5 billion. Musk expressed pride in the new processor, calling it a “masterpiece” that embodies years of effort and innovation. By removing outdated components and streamlining the architecture, Tesla’s engineers have created a compact yet extremely powerful chip — one that Musk says will play a key role in advancing the company’s ambitious AI roadmap.
