Will the iconic sports sedan remain instantly recognizable—or surprise everyone?
Images of the upcoming 2028 BMW M3 have begun circulating online, offering an early look at what the next-generation performance sedan could bring. The design appears to take a noticeable turn, with redesigned taillights and slimmer kidney grilles among the most talked-about changes. Unsurprisingly, the look is already sparking debate—even within BMW’s most loyal fan base. And it’s expected the car will surprise not only with its styling, but with its execution details as well.
BMW is preparing to introduce a new generation of its legendary M3, and digital renderings based on recent spy photos are giving enthusiasts a preview of what’s ahead. If these images are accurate, the automaker has opted for a bold visual reset—one that’s unlikely to leave anyone indifferent.
The most striking changes appear at the rear. The new taillights echo design cues seen on the X6 and XM, stretching across the body to visually widen the car’s stance. A sculpted trunk lid and a chunky rear bumper add aggression, while a sporty diffuser and a subtle ducktail spoiler reinforce the M3’s performance credentials. The wide rear haunches remain intact, preserving a key element of the model’s identity.
From the side, the profile looks largely familiar—and that may be one of the new M3’s strongest points. The silhouette stays sleek, with well-balanced proportions. One modern touch stands out, however: flush-mounted door handles, in line with current design trends and hinting at a more tech-forward approach.
The front end is where opinions may be most divided. On the plus side, BMW’s signature kidney grilles appear noticeably smaller, a change likely to please critics of the oversized grilles seen in recent years. At the same time, the familiar M3 aggression feels toned down. The headlights feature unconventional LED daytime running lights that resemble piercing “snake eyes,” while a large central air intake is flanked by vertical vents at the edges of the bumper. Overall, the front fascia feels fresh, if unconventional.
In the renderings, the future M3 is shown in a bold yellow finish paired with black accents. The roof, mirror caps, body trim, outlines, and even the wheels are finished in dark tones. The contrast sharpens the sedan’s athletic presence and gives it an even more commanding look on the road.
