Rivian R2 Leaked Ahead of Launch: $57,990, 656 HP, and Built-In Door Flashlight

Just before the official debut of the 2026 Rivian R2, nearly every detail about the upcoming model leaked online. The slip reportedly came from a premature article by ArsTechnica, which was quickly removed, but, as usual, the internet had already archived the information. By now, waiting for the official reveal feels almost pointless: pricing, specs, and features are already known.

The first version to hit the market will be the R2 Performance, priced at $57,990, with delivery adding another $1,495. It’s powered by an 87.9 kWh battery feeding a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. Output reaches 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque (825 Nm). Range is estimated at up to 330 miles, with fast charging capable of taking the battery from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes. The model is also expected to feature semi-active suspension.

Inside, the cabin emphasizes comfort and thoughtful touches: birch trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a nine-speaker audio system, and even a flashlight integrated into the front door. Exterior highlights include matrix LED headlights and 21-inch wheels. Optional features include the Autonomy+ subscription for semi-autonomous driving and a towing package rated for 4,400 pounds (1,996 kg).

Later, Rivian plans to launch the R2 Premium at $53,990. It shares a similar drivetrain but with output reduced to 450 hp and 537 lb-ft of torque (727 Nm). This version reportedly drops the advanced suspension, moves to 20-inch wheels, and loses three driving modes.

For buyers looking for something more affordable, the 2027 R2 Standard is coming. It will use the same 87.9 kWh battery but a single rear motor with 350 hp and 355 lb-ft (481 Nm). Thanks to increased efficiency, range climbs to 345 miles. Equipment is simplified: five speakers, front-seat heating only, fully black interior, no flip-down rear window, and 19-inch wheels. By late 2027, a base version is expected with a smaller battery, around 265 miles of range, and an estimated price of $45,000.

R2 dimensions: 185.8 inches long, 78 inches wide, 66.9 inches tall, wheelbase 115.6 inches, and ground clearance up to 9.6 inches. The SUV features a NACS port and cargo volume of up to 79.3 cubic feet, with 28.7 cubic feet available when the rear seats are up. Rivian’s paint palette includes eight colors: Borealis, Catalina Cove, Esker Silver, Forest Green, Glacier White, Half Moon Grey, Launch Green, and Midnight.

This R2 leak gives a near-complete picture of Rivian’s compact EV SUV lineup, from top-tier performance to the most affordable variant, well ahead of the official launch.
