Nissan Could Build a Hybrid Super SUV Using the GT-R R35 Engine
High-performance SUVs are attracting attention beyond luxury automakers, and Nissan could be preparing an unexpected new contender.
High-performance SUVs are no longer the exclusive territory of luxury automakers. Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin have already entered the segment with the Purosangue, Urus, and DBX707. Now, Nissan could be looking to join the competition.
According to Japanese automotive magazine Best Car, Nissan is developing a vehicle with aggressive styling and a powertrain based on the engine from the R35-generation Nissan GT-R. The rumored model could feature a hybrid system, potentially offering a more affordable alternative to today's expensive super SUVs.

Independent designers have released the first unofficial renderings of what the vehicle could look like. The digital illustrations show a coupe-style body, sculpted side panels, and wide fender flares that give the SUV a muscular stance.
The front end takes an especially aggressive approach. The renderings feature multi-level lighting, a narrow grille with vertical elements, and a large front bumper with an elaborate arrangement of air intakes. Black plastic body cladding is intended to reinforce the vehicle's sporty appearance.
These images are speculative designs, not official Nissan previews, and the automaker has not confirmed the model's production plans.,
Developing a super SUV could fit into Nissan's broader strategy to expand its lineup and recover from the financial difficulties the Japanese automaker has faced in recent years.
At the same time, Nissan engineers are expected to continue work on the next-generation GT-R. Company executives have previously expressed their commitment to keeping the sports car alive, even suggesting that a future version could retain the familiar 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 gasoline engine.

Combined with an electric motor in a hybrid powertrain, that engine could potentially produce more than 800 horsepower. Such output would give the legendary Japanese sports car serious performance credentials while potentially paving the way for a high-powered SUV using related technology.
However, it remains unclear whether the rumored crossover would use the exact same engine as the GT-R or a modified version of it.
A production debut is still a long way from being confirmed. Rumors point to a possible launch toward the end of this decade, but Nissan has yet to officially announce the vehicle.
For now, the idea of a hybrid Nissan super SUV powered by GT-R-derived technology remains speculative. If the project moves forward, it could give performance enthusiasts a new alternative to far more expensive models from established exotic-car brands.
