Turbo engine and all-wheel drive: Subaru REX crossover - I'd take it for a ride

Subaru is expanding the lineup of its 2025 REX compact crossover with a new all-wheel-drive version. The updated model is designed to handle both city streets and country roads with confidence, offering owners versatility and comfort in any driving situation.

The new trim features an intelligent torque distribution system that automatically engages the rear wheels when extra traction is needed — for example, on slippery surfaces or during acceleration. Under normal conditions, the system prioritizes front-wheel drive to improve fuel efficiency.

Under the hood, the REX packs a 1.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 98 horsepower and 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) of torque. This compact yet capable powertrain delivers respectable performance while keeping fuel consumption low — the average WLTC-rated economy is 17.4 km per liter (about 41 mpg). For the first time, the REX combines turbocharging with all-wheel drive, making it an appealing choice for drivers who want a balance of efficiency and all-road capability.

The AWD REX comes in two trims — G and Z. The higher-end Z model includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats as standard. Prices start at 2,187,900 yen (around $15,000), giving the crossover a strong value position in its class.

Production of the REX is handled by Daihatsu, with a planned output of 440 units per month across all variants. With this update, Subaru aims to deliver a practical, well-equipped, and affordable compact crossover equally suited for urban commutes and weekend adventures.
