The second generation of the Ford Transit Custom van and Tourneo Custom minibus debuted in 2022 and served as the basis for the latest Volkswagen Transporter and Caravelle models. A year later, the lineup expanded to include the fully electric E-Transit Custom and E-Tourneo Custom, which have now received a significant technical update. The vans and minibuses feature an upgraded traction battery with higher capacity, faster charging, and an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.

The usable battery capacity has increased from 64 to 71 kWh, resulting in a noticeable jump in driving range — from 209 miles to 232 miles under the WLTP cycle. Charging speeds have also improved: the updated models can recharge from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes using a 125 kW terminal, shaving ten minutes off the previous time. For a quick boost equivalent to 69 miles of range, it now takes just ten minutes.

Interestingly, the faster charging capability will also be available to owners of existing vehicles. An upcoming over-the-air update will reduce the 64 kWh battery charging time from 10–80% to roughly 25 minutes, down from 39 minutes.

The base E-Transit Custom and E-Tourneo Custom models still use a single rear-mounted electric motor in three output levels: 136 hp, 218 hp, and 285 hp. However, all-wheel drive is now offered as an option for the two higher-output versions. This is achieved by adding an additional front motor, with power yet to be disclosed.

The dual-motor AWD setup on the most powerful version delivers 464 lb-ft of torque, while the maximum towing capacity remains unchanged at 5,071 pounds. AWD is available across all trims, including the sport-oriented MS-RT version. The models continue to offer a power outlet for tools or use as a mobile power station.

Pricing for the updated E-Transit Custom and E-Tourneo Custom has not been announced, but it’s clear the bigger battery and all-wheel drive will come at a premium. Currently, the electric vans start at roughly $66,700 (58,000 euro), while the minibuses begin around $77,000 (67,000 euro).
