Top 5 Engines That Can Last 1 Million Miles

A ranking has been compiled of the most durable engines proven to run for more than 1 million miles.

Top 5 Engines That Can Last 1 Million Miles

A list has been compiled highlighting some of the most long-lived engines ever built—powerplants that have covered well over 1 million miles in real-world use.

1. Toyota 1UZ-FE (4.0-liter V8)
Topping the list is Toyota’s 4.0-liter 1UZ-FE V8. This engine powered Toyota’s flagship sedans as well as premium Lexus LS and GS models. One Lexus LS 400 owner reportedly drove more than 930,000 miles without any major engine repairs, setting a remarkable longevity record.

2. Toyota 3UR-FE (5.0-liter V8)
Second place goes to the 5.0-liter Toyota 3UR-FE, most commonly found under the hood of the Toyota Tundra pickup. In the U.S., one example covered nearly 1 million miles in under ten years, thanks to frequent long-distance driving. The owner noted the engine’s exceptional consistency and durability.

3. Honda F22A (2.2-liter inline-four)
Taking third place is Honda’s 2.2-liter F22A four-cylinder engine, used in mid-1990s Honda Accord models. One such vehicle reportedly logged close to 1 million miles without ever needing an engine replacement.

Cummins B-Series

4. Nissan QR25DE (2.5-liter inline-four)
Fourth on the list is Nissan’s QR25DE engine, found in models such as the Altima, Sentra, and Frontier pickup. In 2007, one example reached nearly 1 million miles without undergoing a major engine overhaul.

5. Cummins B-Series (5.9-liter turbodiesel)
Rounding out the top five is the legendary 5.9-liter Cummins B-Series turbodiesel, installed in the Dodge Ram 2500. Some owners claim their trucks have surpassed 1.2 million miles, reinforcing the engine’s reputation as one of the toughest diesel powerplants ever made.

Together, these engines have earned near-mythical status among enthusiasts, proving that with proper maintenance, mechanical longevity on a truly extreme scale is possible.
