Development of the next-generation Toyota Fortuner is reportedly nearing completion. The three-row SUV, which is based on the best-selling Toyota Hilux pickup, is set to undergo updates similar to those introduced on the truck last year.
The new model is expected to maintain its proven off-road credentials and seven-passenger seating configuration, while adopting a more contemporary look inspired by both the Hilux and the current-generation Toyota RAV4.
According to fresh speculative renderings, the updated Fortuner will feature a front-end design closely mirroring the Hilux, including a redesigned grille and a more aggressive front bumper that give the SUV a tougher, more futuristic appearance. At the rear, designers are expected to borrow styling cues from the RAV4, including a black trim strip connecting the horizontal taillights.
Under the skin, the next-generation Fortuner is expected to retain its body-on-frame architecture, albeit in updated form. Powertrain options should largely mirror those of the Hilux, including a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Maximum payload is projected to reach approximately 2,200 pounds, with towing capacity rated at up to 7,700 pounds.
In addition, a fully electric variant is rumored, potentially offering an estimated driving range of about 150 miles on a full charge, along with improved towing capability for a vehicle in this class.
Interior images have not yet been revealed in the renderings, but the cabin is expected to feature dual 12.3-inch displays—one for the digital instrument cluster and one for the infotainment system—similar to the setup found in the latest Hilux.
Physical buttons for key functions such as climate control and audio are likely to remain, and the steering wheel may be borrowed from the Toyota Land Cruiser.
The global debut of the next-generation Toyota Fortuner is scheduled for later this year.
