Toyota's next Probox is expected to add hybrid power, a TNGA platform, and improved technology by 2028.
Toyota is reportedly developing an all-new generation of the Probox wagon. According to reports from Japan, the redesigned model is expected to debut in 2028 with Toyota's TNGA architecture, a modern hybrid powertrain, and the same practical design that has made the vehicle a longtime favorite.
The Toyota Probox has been in production since the early 2000s and has become one of the brand's best-known commercial vehicles in Japan. Offered in both passenger and cargo configurations, the wagon has built its reputation on a simple design, generous cargo capacity, and affordable pricing.
Japanese media reports say Toyota has already begun developing the next-generation Probox. The new model is expected to be significantly more modern while preserving the utility-focused character that continues to make it popular in its home market.
According to the reports, the next Probox will ride on Toyota's TNGA platform, likely using the GA-B architecture already found in several of the automaker's compact models.
Moving to the new platform is expected to increase body rigidity, reduce vehicle weight, and lower the center of gravity. Sources also claim the wagon's commercial capabilities—including payload capacity and long-term durability—will remain largely unchanged.
The Probox's exterior is also expected to receive a redesign while maintaining its familiar formula. Insiders say the wagon will retain its signature boxy body, maximizing interior space and cargo capacity.
The updated model is also expected to feature redesigned front and rear lighting along with more contemporary exterior styling. Reports indicate Toyota will keep the low cargo floor, folding rear seats, and spacious cargo area that have allowed the Probox to serve as both a work vehicle and a practical family wagon.
Toyota refreshed the current Probox late last year, adding the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver-assistance technologies and a digital instrument cluster.
The update also eliminated the entry-level 1.3-liter gasoline engine from the lineup. In Japan, the current Probox is priced between approximately $12,900 and $15,200, based on current exchange rates.
Japanese reports suggest the next-generation model will cost more. The adoption of the TNGA platform, upgraded safety technologies, and a new hybrid powertrain could increase pricing by roughly $2,000 to $3,400, making the Probox less affordable than today's model while bringing it in line with modern market expectations.
If the reports prove accurate, the next-generation Toyota Probox will make its debut in 2028.
