Honda is preparing a mid-cycle update for the HR-V, and the crossover could become a hybrid-only model before its full redesign.
Honda is getting ready to give its compact HR-V crossover another update. In Japan, the automaker has already stopped taking new orders for the current version, leaving customers to choose only from remaining dealer inventory. The facelift is expected to arrive next, potentially eliminating gasoline-only variants from the lineup. A fully redesigned next-generation HR-V is reportedly scheduled to debut in 2028 with fresh styling and an upgraded hybrid powertrain.
The Honda HR-V first debuted in 1998 as one of the brand's earliest compact crossovers. After a hiatus, it returned in 2013, while the current third-generation model arrived in 2021. Today, the HR-V remains one of Honda's core global models, sold across Japan, Europe, Asia, and several other markets.
According to reports from Japan, Honda has officially ended new HR-V orders in its home market. The company's Japanese website states that buyers can now purchase only vehicles remaining in inventory, with limited color and trim choices available.
The refreshed HR-V is expected to be unveiled in the near future. Early reports suggest the updated model will be offered exclusively with Honda's e:HEV hybrid powertrain in Japan, while gasoline-only versions will be dropped. Honda is also expected to introduce new trim levels featuring upgraded equipment and improved cabin comfort.
Looking further ahead, Japanese media reports indicate the next-generation HR-V will arrive in 2028. The crossover is expected to ride on a new modular platform designed to improve interior packaging while reducing manufacturing costs.
The new model is rumored to measure approximately 171.3 inches long, 69.7 inches wide, and 62.2 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 103.9 inches. The larger footprint should provide noticeably more rear-seat legroom.
If recently published renderings prove accurate, the next HR-V will feature a completely redesigned exterior. A full-width LED light bar integrated with the daytime running lights is expected to dominate the front end, while a slimmer horizontal grille and redesigned front bumper should give the crossover a wider and more athletic appearance. Honda is also rumored to introduce new Sport Line and Trail Line variants.
Inside, the cabin is expected to receive a significant technology upgrade. The next HR-V could feature a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google built-in services, Honda Connect connectivity, and the latest version of the Honda Sensing driver-assistance suite. Higher-quality interior materials are also expected throughout the cabin.
The biggest mechanical upgrade will likely be a revised e:HEV hybrid system pairing a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 106 horsepower with two electric motors delivering up to 131 horsepower. The system is also expected to gain Honda's S+Shift technology—recently introduced on the revived Prelude—to provide quicker, more engaging powertrain responses.
Early reports suggest the updated hybrid could average about 63.6 mpg, representing a noticeable improvement in fuel efficiency over the current model.
