A 1991 Audi 80 is closing in on a mileage record.
A 1991 Audi 80 owned by Belgian Martin Lefever is approaching the 1-million-kilometer mark. The car is still in service 35 years after he bought it new and continues to retain its major original components. The owner believes the key to its longevity is calm driving, regular maintenance, and keeping the car protected.
The Audi 80 debuted in 1972. The model became the brand's first million-selling bestseller and laid the foundation for the family of cars carrying the B designation. The fourth-generation B4 debuted in September 1991 and featured a substantially revised design compared with the B3. In 1994, the Audi 80 sedan was replaced by the new B5-generation A4, while production of the 80 Avant continued until 1995.
The history of this particular Audi 80 began in 1991, when Martin Lefever bought the car new. Since then, the Belgian has never switched to another car, and his Audi has continued to serve as his daily driver.
The car's odometer is now approaching 1,000,000 kilometers. Only about 60 to 70 kilometers remain, so the millionth kilometer should be reached very soon.
Remarkably, this Audi 80 still has its original engine, original clutch, and original transmission. Over the decades, the car's major mechanical components have not needed to be replaced.
Lefever attributes the car's longevity to his driving style. He worked as a driving instructor for 25 years and applied the same smooth and careful driving principles to his own Audi that he taught his students.
Maintenance may also have played an important role. The car received regular service, while it was kept in a garage overnight, protecting it from the elements.
The owner has a simple explanation for why he has not sold his Audi 80 despite its mileage: the car continued to run reliably, so he saw no reason to replace it.
Over the years, this 80 has not only covered an enormous distance but has also attracted attention from people around it. The appearance of an early-1990s Audi 80 now stands out from most cars on European roads, so the vehicle occasionally catches the eyes of passersby.
According to the owner, his Audi will continue driving after reaching the million-kilometer mark. The Belgian plans to celebrate the milestone with a small party.
Meanwhile, we recently covered the Audi cars driven by Jason Statham in the popular Hollywood film franchise The Transporter.
